Awesome Ways to Customize Your Kitchen Featured imageAh, the kitchen. The room that everyone ends up in at every get-together. As one of the most coveted rooms in the home, it’s only natural to want to make it as fantastic as possible. So, if you’re considering creating your very own stellar custom kitchen, here are a few ideas to help get you started.

Eye-Catching Countertops

Quartz – Extremely popular, quartz countertops are made from beautifully engineered stone. Known for its durability, low-maintenance and resistance to wear and tear, quartz is ideal for busy families wanting upscale countertops that will keep up with daily demands. Coming in a variety of colours and patterns, this material needs no re-sealing and is incredibly easy to clean.

Granite – Elegant, durable and easy to clean, granite is a natural stone that comes in a variety of sizes, shapes, colours and patterns. Slightly more expensive than quartz, this is the perfect option if you’re looking to make a statement. Granite countertops do need to be re-sealed periodically, to keep their integrity.

Other Ideas – If you’re really looking for unique, made-to-order countertops, concrete, marble, butcher block and glass are all options you can discuss with your builder.

Classy Cabinetry

Just like your countertops, you’ll have an array of options when it comes to choosing your kitchen cabinetry. Here are a few popular material choices for you to consider:

Cherry Wood – As you can probably tell by the name, this evenly grained wood is characterized by it’s red/brown undertones. It easily caters to different finishes and ages beautifully. Cherry wood cabinets are extremely versatile for both more traditional and modern looks.

Oak – Oak cabinets often conjure up images of the oak craze so popular during 1990’s home design. But with the variety of shades and finishes available today, it’s easy to include oak cabinetry that reflects current style sensibilities (it’s perfect if you love rustic design). onus – oak is extremely durable and easy to maintain.

Maple – Maple cabinets are popular for their smoother, uniform appearance and durability. Stronger than oak, maple is one of the toughest hardwoods around, making it resistant to dents and dings. Maple cabinets are available in many colours and are very affordable.

Other Ideas – Builders who are open to customization will be more than happy to personalize your cabinetry however you see fit. In fact, many builders may offer what would normally be considered a custom option as a standard. For example, Broadview cabinets are all built by a trusted, local source and include taller units and more drawers (including two sets of pot and pans drawers) in every home at no extra cost.

Inviting Islands

Kitchen islands are a welcome addition for most home owners due to the added counter, prep eating and storage space. Not to mention, they’re great for entertaining. If you’re looking to add a little extra beauty and functionality to your custom kitchen, consider the following:

L- Shapes – L-shaped islands  are ideal for the amateur chef in your home (or if you generally have more than one cook in the kitchen at once). Usually quite large, they offer ample work space, plenty of storage and bar-style appeal.

U – Shapes – Here too, U-shaped islands are another great option for those who love to cook. This style of island provides a ton of work, storage space and seating along with symmetry and clean lines.

Circular – If you’re looking for something with a little more character than the conventional kitchen island, consider a circular island design. This style makes for a great entertaining/dining space and adds a truly unique look to any kitchen. You can talk to your builder about half and full circle options.

Other Ideas – To really up the entertainment factor, think about equipping your island with a built-in wine rack, an additional sink and plenty of seating. Keep it open to the rest of the main floor to easily converse with friends and family while preparing drinks or food.

Fantastic Flooring

Nothing completes the look of a well-designed kitchen like some great flooring. Here again, working with a good builder means you’ll have a few choices.

Hardwood – All natural and a traditional favourite among many, hardwood comes in a wide variety of species and colours. From oak to cherry, the options are endless. Aside from its elegant appearance, hardwood is also very easy to clean. One thing to keep in mind – its natural properties make it softer and more susceptible to shrinkage (from humidity levels) and scratches.

Laminate – If you’re not sure about 100% hardwood, consider laminate flooring  instead. Mostly comprised of wood, this type of flooring looks great, is easy to install and very affordable. Laminate is also resistant to moisture, is extremely durable, and easy to clean.

Vinyl Plank – Vinyl plank flooring is completely engineered – making it extremely moisture resistant. Vinyl plank also looks like wood flooring in pattern and colour and is very durable and easy to maintain – ideal if you have children or pets.

Other Ideas – Talk to your builder about tile, bamboo, cork and any other flooring options that may appeal to you – flooring options are numerous and can set the tone for your entire kitchen and home.

As we mentioned, the kitchen is one of the most popular and well-used rooms in any home – and above are just a few of the many options that may be available to you when it comes to designing the perfect one. That’s what makes working with a flexible home builder so important – you deserve to be able to customize your kitchen, your way. Visiting show homes  can also help make your ideas come to life.
